Christmas Greetings from Animals In Need 2009
Wishing you a Happy Christmas and A Peaceful New Year from all
your 2 & 4 legged friends at the Sanctuary
Dear Friends,
Thank you for your kindness and interest during 2009. We are indebted to you. With your help we have saved over 1000 valuable lives. Many of the animals were sickly, tired or injured and some were about to be destroyed. Because of you and your faith in us, these animals are alive and well today.
The photos printed in this newsletter are of animals at the sanctuary awaiting homes. Many will be spending Christmas with us. They can’t say Thank You, so we will say it for them. Because of your support they are safe in our care and will enjoy a Christmas dinner of a chicken & veg stew for the dogs, steamed cod for the cats and there’s lots of juicy carrots & apples for the rabbits & goats. Thanks to all who donate this special food.
They are the lucky ones, warm and well fed, with our staff to love and care for them. We want to save as many more lives as we can and every space at the sanctuary will be filled with a homeless animal. We always make room at the Inn.
On a sad note our lovely boy ROCKY will be spending another Christmas in police custody kennels. We won’t forget him and hope that you will give your support to our Freedom for Rocky campaign. Please sign and return the statement enclosed and see back for details. You don’t have to donate to sign the form.
It has been confirmed by experts, that Rocky is not a pit bull terrier and we will be in court on 19th Jan 2010 to plead his case and ours. We hope that justice will prevail and common sense will influence the outcome, after all where's the sense in using the public purse to detain a gentle neutered dog like Rocky, for 12 months. It would be criminal to destroy him. Sign our online petition
This year we have had our difficulties, but because of your amazing support our charity goes from strength to strength. We remain committed to speaking out for our 4 legged friends.
You are welcome to visit the sanctuary during the Christmas period and say hello to the animals you have helped save, and even enjoy a mince pie with the staff!
With grateful thanks and kindest regards,
Fran Ellis, Margaret Brady for the Trustees, Caroline Cassidy and all the staff
and volunteers at the Sanctuary
AUTUMN 2009 NEWSLETTER
Dear Friends & Supporters,
Another Autumn approaches rapidly and we find ourselves ill prepared to write this newsletter. So much has happened in the last few months and too many desperate animals have needed our support. The staff and the Trustees have been working tirelessly to accommodate and fund all these needy cases, however even working 7 days a week and over 12 hours every day, we still don’t have time to accomplish all we need to do. We have had to carry out much needed renovations to kennel floors, by removing old vinyl covering and replacing them with quarry tiles. The kennels are now more hygienic and a nicer place for the dogs to live in. We are hoping this will enable to control the kennel cough epidemic which has been such a problem this year. The Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust kindly funded this work and we are very grateful for their continued support and faith in the work we do.
We were also able to make improvements to the cats external runs thanks to a team from ‘Novartis’ in Speke. They undertook this as a charity project, cleaning, painting and planting in the cat area. It looks very nice and we are grateful to them. We are now in the process of updating the rabbit unit, so our bunnies can have a better quality of life. It’s always our aim to provide the best possible care and accommodation for all the animals that come to us, until they are found new homes.
Our situation has not been helped by a break-in to our premises at the beginning of August. Thankfully the animals were not hurt. These horrible people managed to break a window and make off with our safe containing over £500 in cash and cheques. Fortunately, the cheques were recovered, but we still suffered a loss of revenue in excess of £800. The police have not been able to find out who did this. We have increased security and have alarms and will be installing CCTV.
Update on Rocky—Although we always try to remain positive we cannot help being distressed over the plight of our lovely boy, ROCKY. The poor dog has now been held by the police for almost 10mths, his crime is to be born a X Staffordshire Bull Terrier and our crime is that we loved him and saved him. We found him a wonderful home with Judy & Harry Groves, who are responsible and respectable people with a long term involvement with Animals In Need. As well as adopting dogs from us, Judy together with Margaret Brady runs the cat outwork. The police have now decided to prosecute Judy & Harry and ourselves as criminals under Section 1 of the Dangerous Dogs Act. We will have to defend ourselves in court and pay for a solicitor as well as other costs. We still find it hard to believe that a hard working and highly respected organisation that tirelessly serves the community, can be treated in this way. We still receive calls from the police regarding dog related issues and we continue to help for the sake of the animals.
We are relying on your support more than ever—WE MUST NOT BE DEFEATED— so that we can continue to speak and act behalf of our friends, the animals.
Kind Regards
Fran Ellis, Margaret Brady for the Trustees & Caroline Cassidy and all at the Sanctuary

SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2009
Dear Friends,
This newsletter is a tribute to our wonderful supporters for all the kindness you have shown to the
animals in our care. Thank you for rising to the challenge each time we appeal to you. Your generosity has allowed us to help the most vulnerable animals like little Cuddles, Roger, Amy the kitten and many more, the list is endless. We have now established the ‘Cuddles Fund’. This fund will be ongoing to continue to pay vet bills for sick and injured animals. Our recent additions are Grace, a gentle grey Staffordshire Terrier and Luther a handsome black greyhound. Grace had a badly dislocated hip and the staff at the PDSA informed us of her plight. The RSPCA were unable to fund her treatment and this lovely little dog was to be put to sleep. But thanks to the ‘Cuddles Funds’ she is on the road to recovery. We also used the fund to help Luther, who had a serious tail injury and Dolly, a stray who needed a urgent eye operation. She was found heavily pregnant & starving in Huyton, but sadly only 2 of her pups survived.
Thanks to your kindness these lovely, worthy animals are alive and well today.
Kanga was one of 4 kittens born 12 weeks ago. The prettiest of the litter (see below), and the sweetest nature. Although she was born disabled, with under developed front paws, she has learnt to adapt to her disability and uses her back legs to ‘bunny hop’ , hence her name Kanga –Roo. She is just like any other kitten and has exactly the same quality of life. She now needs a loving home. Kanga would make an ideal pet, as she would be able to have the freedom of the garden and wouldn’t be able to escape.
We know times are very hard which makes us especially grateful to those that support us. We welcome any new ways to fund the Sanctuary, contact us if you can help.
Rocky Update—Sadly after almost 6mths Rocky is still in police custody. We think of this lovely boy everyday and are desperate to have him returned to his owner. We still assist the police and recently took a dog called Tito who was also seized as a Pit Bull Terrier, but after 9 months they decided he wasn’t one! Tito was about to be destroyed but thankfully this funny, friendly dog is now enjoying life at our
Sanctuary and will soon find a loving home. (Picture of Tito with shades above!)
There is so much to tell you and so little space, but we do like to keep our friends informed.
WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU
Kind Regards

Spring 2009 Newsletter
Dear Friends,
It will come as no surprise to hear that the run up to Xmas and New Year was perhaps the busiest & most demanding we have ever experienced. We recorded dozens of calls daily concerning unwanted dogs and cats desperate for our help. We had to act quickly to bring in those abandoned without food or shelter. Some were left in empty houses and flats, others in sheds and backyards. One little dog was left in an empty flat in a freezing cold bathroom. She was so grateful to be rescued and kept cuddling up to us. Many pregnant cats were cruelly left to fate in gardens. Although our Sanctuary was full to bursting point, we still responded positively to every call and offered some form of help until we could find room at the Inn. This increased pressure on the Rescue, has put a great strain on us and we are critically short of funding. We need YOU, our caring supporters to spread the word, as without extra funding we can’t continue our valuable work.
We were stretched to breaking point and thought things couldn’t get any worse, only to be faced with a visit by police officers just before Xmas accusing us of harbouring Pit Bull Terriers. We were subjected to allegations concerning 5 of our dogs and after a disturbing day for all concerned, 4 of the dogs were cleared. However, the 5th dog, Rocky, a lovely, gentle neutered, micro-chipped pet was seized and carted off to police kennels. This is at the expense of the tax payer even though we offered to keep him at our Sanctuary. He showed only affection towards the police and licked their hands. Rocky is a brindle X Staff, a view substantiated by our vet and an animal behaviourist. He has been held in ‘secret police kennels’ for over 12 weeks. We have since learnt that he has lost weight and has had an injury to his paw. We have been informed that he is recovering, but are still waiting to be summoned to court to fight for his return. We hope that you, our friends, will support our actions to save this innocent dog. We have known Rocky since he was 14 weeks old and his plight has left us all heartbroken. He has never put a paw wrong. We have a petition available for friends of Animals In Need to show their support for the law abiding Sanctuary we are. You can request copies or they can be signed at the Sanctuary, Fun Dog Show or our Formby shop. Thanks to those of you who have written to the Chief Constable to support us.
On a brighter note, we have been fortunate to find many good homes recently for the dogs and cats in our care. This has enabled us to help other desperate cases more quickly than expected & has lifted our spirits.
We will continue to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and we will fight for the rights of all needy animals.
Kind Regards
Fran Ellis for the Trustees, Caroline Cassidy and all at the Sanctuary
